The lady Coconino Panthers entered the elite eight of the Pepsi Holiday Tournament tonight after beating Poston Butte the night before.

Friday night they took on the Winslow Bulldogs, Winslow being one of the top teams in northern Arizona and a top 50 team overall in Arizona.

The first quarter was a season low for the Panthers as they were only held down to five points. The only points coming from a basket from point guard Kenzie Palmer and forward Mairlee David and a free throw from Oniah Barton-Paddock.

The struggle continued in the second quarter when the Panthers were only able to add four more points to the scoreboard from two baskets Palmer and Mahala Long.

From the second half to the end of the game the Panthers were put on clamps, only putting up 23 more points in that half and Oniah Barton-Paddock was shut down this game as well only having five points tonight.

The help of senior point guard Kenzie Palmer when she was able to step up to help put points on the board. She finished the night with a team high nine points. I ask coach Martin Reyes on his senior stepping up.

“She is a senior and she is good for this team. She is the vocal leader of the team and has great character and works hard. All of the girls on the team respect her and it is good to see her play her heart out for her last season.”

The Panthers would end up losing the game 32-50.

With the lost, they will play AZ Lutheran Saturday afternoon at 3:30 P.M at Northern Preparatory Academy in the consolation bracket. The Panthers can still earn third place, and if they learn their mistakes from tonight’s game, the team can make a push for that third place spot.
