The Pepsi Holiday Tournament of the 2018 season kicked off tonight at Sinagua Middle School and the lady Coconino Panthers took on the lady Poston Butte Broncos from San Tan Valley in the first round.

Losing their first two games, the Broncos went on a three game winning streak having impressive wins of Apache Junction and Tempe, heading into the Pepsi Holiday Tournament, they were looking to keep that hot streak going.

The lady Panthers also rolling into the tournament with a three game winning streak, with dominating wins over Mohave and Cortez.

The first have was a tight one as the Broncos were able to keep the star of the Panthers, Oniah Barton-Paddock quiet, as she only had three points with no rebounds and assists.

When the second half started the floodgates opened up for the Panthers as Barton-Paddock and Marilee David led the second half charge.

Barton-Paddock was able to contribute to her team and stats with two more points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal. While David was able to add five points and three rebounds.

The remaining five minutes of the game head coach Martin Reyes put in his bench and they were able to shut down the Broncos starters for the remainder of the game.

This is what Reyes thought about his bench: “They played good, it is a good growing process for them and they work hard in these situations. It helps them get better.”

The lady Panthers will play tomorrow at 4 P.M. and will play the winner of either Winslow or Sunrise Mountain from Las Vegas.  The Flagstaff Eagles also plays tomorrow and will play Snowflake at 7 P.M.
