Arizona State House Bill 2523 could allow Arizona community colleges to offer 4-year degree programs. It has passed in the House, but is still being reviewed in the State Senate.
Whether or not it passes, education in Flagstaff will remain relatively unchanged. Coconino Community College has decided to not participate because of its close relationship with NAU. CCC President Dr. Colleen Smith and Provost Dr. Nate Southerland explain that students are encouraged to attend NAU for their bachelors degrees. If CCC started offering these too, the partnership would suffer.
Arizona Board of Regents Chairman Larry Penley agrees, saying that the Board supports the bill, as long as there are provisions to increase collaboration between community colleges and universities.
