Heavy Rains Causing Flooding and Road Closures North of Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF (NAZ Today)- Several streets north of Flagstaff are closed due to heavy rain and flooding.

The Arizona Deparment of Transportation closed US 89 in both directions briefly this afternoon from Silver Saddle Road to the Sunset Crater turnoff. A line of strong thunderstorms is pouring rain over the area, which prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Flash Flood Warning at 2:15.  The warning will remain in effect for the Schultz Burn area and Fernwood/Wupatki Trails, Timberline Estates, and Hutchinson Acres.  The warning does not include Doney Park, according to the NWS.

Coconino County reports that curb-to-curb street flooding is occurring, causing the closure of Campbell Avenue, Brandis Way, Kevin’s Way, and Henry’s Way at North Highway 89.

Via Twitter, eyewitnesses are reporting flooding.   “*sigh* … another huge runoff zipping by my house. I am tired of this flooding stuff!” one person tweeted.

A Red Cross Evacuation Center has been opened up at Flagstaff Middle School.
