FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Supporters of a cityhood effort for the tiny town at the gateway to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim are pouring thousands of dollars per voter into the effort.

Tusayan (TU’-say-ohn) has only 244 registered voters, yet Coconino County records show a group supporting the cityhood vote on March 9 has spent nearly $350,000 on the election. That’s more than $1,400 per voter.

A group opposing cityhood has spent about $26,000, which works out to $107 per voter.

The group supporting cityhood is called Grand Canyon Exchange. Arizona Secretary of State records show the entity is a general partner of Canyon Forest Village II Corp.

Canyon Forest Village was the name for a large housing and retail complex previously approved by Coconino County supervisors but rejected by Coconino County voters.

The opposition group is called Red Feather Lodge, the name of a local hotel.
