PHOENIX (AP) — The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved an additional $20 fee on photo-enforcement cases Wednesday.

Drivers who ignore photo-enforcement citations from state highways in Maricopa County would face the higher fines, which will start next month. Only those who take their cases to court and are found guilty would be liable for the fee.

County officials say the fees will offset the costs of administering photo-enforcement cases that have overwhelmed the county’s justice courts since they began appearing last November.

Some courts reportedly are processing up to 14,000 photo-enforcement cases per month.

The new fee will be tacked on to photo-enforcement citations issued by the state Department of Public Safety to cover some court costs.
