DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) — Gun and ammunition sales are up at a Douglas store following the murder two weeks ago of a southern Arizona cattle rancher.

Authorities believe an illegal immigrant — most likely someone working for a smuggling cartel — shot the 58-year-old Rob Krentz on March 27 on his ranch near Douglas.

Krentz managed to drive away in his all-terrain vehicle before dying from his wounds. Nothing had been stolen from him, his gun was still in its holster and his dog was killed, too.

The general manager of Allsafe Security, Lynn Kartchner, says he’s selling 20 guns a week and most of them are handguns.

Kartchner says he’s unhappy that the rise in sales stems from a death in the community. He says he was friends with Krentz and misses him.

ST. JOHNS, Ariz. (AP) — A 10-year-old boy who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his father’s friend in November 2008 was ordered Thursday to a residential treatment program.

Defense attorneys and prosecutors had pushed for the St. Johns boy to be placed in the private program in Maricopa County, but Judge Monica Stauffer also had the option of sending him to a county facility.

The length of the boy’s stay in the program is unclear, but he’ll also be placed on intensive probation until he turns 18.

The boy was 8 when he was charged in the shooting deaths of his father, 29-year-old Vincent Romero, and his father’s friend, 39-year-old Timothy Romans. He pleaded guilty to shooting Romans and the charges related to his father’s death were dropped as part of a plea deal.

A motive never has been made clear, although the boy told investigators he kept a tally of spankings.

The Associated Press is not identifying the boy because of his age.

The sentencing ends a 14-month saga that created a buzz in legal circles as experts questioned whether the boy had the mental capacity to understand the crimes.

During the hearing in the courthouse in St. Johns, the boy said through his lawyers that he’s sorry for killing his father and apologized for hurting the Romans family and his own family.

The boy’s attorney, Ron Wood, said he made a choice that day between killing himself or killing the two men.

When asked by the judge whether he understood the sentence, the boy replied: “Yes, ma’am.”

He kept his head down through most of the hearing, and only looked up when was asked to address the court.

Talk of a plea deal surfaced less than a month after the shootings, but an agreement wasn’t reached until February.

Arizona law allows criminal charges to be filed against anyone 8 or older. At least one expert who evaluated him later deemed the boy incompetent to stand trial.

GALLUP, N.M. (AP) — A slain Catholic nun who lived and worked on the Navajo Indian reservation was remembered Saturday for her passion for the poor at funeral services.

A tearful, standing-room only crowd attended a funeral Mass for 64-year-old Sister Marguerite Bartz at Gallup’s Sacred Heart Cathedral. Bartz was laid to rest later Saturday just across the state line in St. Michaels, Ariz., on a rocky hillside overlooking the reservation where she lived for the last decade.

Bartz was dedicated to working with the poor, and her duties included giving advice on raising children, running religious education classes and traveling to the homes of Navajo elders on remote parts of the reservation.

People often suggested that she take a break from her responsibilities, said the Rev. Gilbert Schneider, a Franciscan priest who worked with Bartz at the Guadalupe Indian Mission in Pena Blanco, N.M., and at St. Berard Catholic Church in Navajo, N.M.

But she would typically reject the idea, Schneider told the hundreds who gathered.

“I have to be here for my people,” Bartz would say, according to Schneider.

Bartz’s body was discovered Sunday in her home on St. Berard’s property.

Authorities announced on Friday the arrest of Reehahlio Carroll. The 18-year-old allegedly broke into Bartz’s trailer home in search of cash or valuable items and has been charged with the “unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought.”

Many funeral attendees wore memorial ribbons on their shirts, jackets and blouses in honor of Bartz.

Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament President Patricia Suchalski told mourners that during her 43 years as a nun, Bartz showed her compassion daily for God and for God’s people — especially the poor.

FLAGSTAFF (AP) By: Felicia Fonseca — An Arizona man being held on a murder charge made surprise confessions in two other killings, and told authorities he would have continued on a vigilante-style killing spree if he hadn’t been caught, authorities said Wednesday.

William Inmon of the rural eastern Arizona town of Springerville is among four people charged in the death of 16-year-old Ricky Flores from nearby St. Johns. Flores’ body was found burned and buried in a shallow grave two weeks after his mother reported him missing on Aug. 14.

Inmon, 21, pleaded guilty to that slaying and confessed to the separate shooting deaths of 60-year-old Daniel Achten and 72-year-old William “Stoney” McCarragher, Apache County Attorney Michael Whiting said.

Achten was reported missing in March. McCarragher was found shot to death in his bed in 2007. Both men lived alone on rural properties outside of St. Johns.

Whiting said Inmon expressed remorse about killing Flores — the two were known to be friends. But Inmon told authorities that he was proud of the other two slayings, saying that both of them needed to go, Whiting said.

“He is ridding society of less-than-desirable people, in his mind. People he determines should not be in society,” Whiting said.

Inmon had planned to kill two others, including a drug dealer, Whiting said.

Inmon led investigators last week to Achten’s body on Achten’s property. Like Flores’ body, Achten’s was burned and buried in a shallow grave, Whiting said.

Inmon had been considered a potential suspect in McCarragher’s murder, but was never charged, Whiting said. Instead, authorities focused on a group of youths who discovered McCarragher’s body days after he was shot.

When asked whether he had any regrets, Whiting said Inmon told authorities he wished he hadn’t involved others in the murders.

Inmon’s friend, Joseph Roberts, faces a first-degree murder charge in McCarragher’s death. The 22-year-old is also charged with concealment of a dead body, tampering with evidence, hindering prosecution and mutilating a human body in Achten’s death, authorities said.

An after-hours call Wednesday to Inmon’s attorney, Albert Lassen, went unanswered.

Prosecutors have agreed not to pursue the death penalty because Inmon was cooperating with authorities. He faces 25 years to life on each count of first-degree murder.

During a check of the home deputies found both deceased persons.

An initial investigation by YCSO detectives from the Criminal Investigations section has determined that Lisa Grondin’s death was caused by her husband Jared Grondin, who later killed himself. Jared Grondin’s apparent suicide occurred by use of a firearm. The exact cause of Lisa Grondin’s death is currently under investigation and pending results of an autopsy that is scheduled later this week. Detectives have determined that no other people were inside the home when the events took place.
