Grand Canyon, AZ. -According to the Grand Canyon National Park at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center (Grand Canyon’s 911 dispatch center) received a report of a man down on the Bright Angel Trail just below “mile-and-a-half house”. The reporting party, family members who had hiked ahead of the man, said that when they found him he was not breathing, was unresponsive and his head was bleeding.

While rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene, the 911 operator provided family members with instructions on how to perform CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation). Upon arriving at the scene, park rescue personnel took over CPR, but were never able to revive the patient; and he was declared dead at the scene.

The man has been identified as 63 year old Joseph Mitchell of Clarkdale, Arizona. His body was retrieved this morning by helicopter via long-line operation and transported to the South Rim helibase where it was transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

The National Park Service is conducting an investigation into the incident.

NAVAJO, N.M. (AP) – A 64-year-old nun has been found dead in her residence at St. Berard Mission Church on the Navajo Indian reservation, and authorities believe she was murdered.

The FBI says Sister Marguerite Bartz failed to show up to Sunday Mass so a colleague went to check on her and found her body.

Her vehicle, a beige 2005 Honda CR-V, is missing. It has a New Jersey license plate, NF24821.

The FBI and state police are combing Bartz’s residence for evidence, and an autopsy is planned.

FBI Special Agent Darrin Jones would not say how Bartz died.

Investigators would like to speak with anyone who talked with Bartz on Halloween night or anyone who believes they may have information related to the case.

Jones says any detail, however small, could help.

Kingman police say a dead body was found below the railroad overpass on the south side of eastbound I-40 at what appeared to be a mini-encampment off the tracks.

Kingman police Sgt. Bob Fisk said the body appeared to have been there anywhere from three to five days based on decomposition.

The body was found face down in a seated position.

Initially police couldn’t tell if the body was male or female, but a man’s boot was found at the scene, along with several other items, including scattered bottles of booze.

No immediate cause of death was found at the scene, but Fisk said foul play has been ruled out.
