FLAGSTAFF (NAZ Today)– If you are a registered voter in Coconino County, you will find a ballot or two in your mailbox in the next couple of days telling you where to vote when it’s time to fill out the real ballot on August 24th.

The Coconino County Elections Office is in the process of mailing out sample ballots for each recognized political party in the state. The parties recognized by the State of Arizona are Republican, Democrat, Libertarian and Green. If all the registered voters living in a household are registered with a single party, one ballot will be mailed for members of the household to share. If the household is made up of people registered with multiple political parties, one ballot for each party will be mailed.

Election day is Tuesday, August 24th, and the sample ballots will tell voters where their poling place is located. Voters may only vote on the ballot of the party for which they are registered in a primary election.

Today is the last day for voters to request an early official ballot to be mailed to them from the Coconino County Elections Office. Voters who are signed up as Permanent Early Voters will not receive a sample ballot, only the official ballot, which has been mailed out to the voters on the PEV list.

Early ballots may be cast next week (August 16-20) in person at the Elections Office in Flagstaff at 110 East Cherry, or at other designated locations throughout Coconino County. To find out where to cast an early ballot outside of Flagstaff, or for more information, contact the Coconino County Elections Office at (928) 679-7860 or toll-free at 800-783-6181.

FLAGSTAFF (NAZ Today)– Fire restrictions are in effect on nearly all public lands across northern Arizona.

The Coconino and Kaibab National Forests enacted restrictions at 8 am Wednesday morning, restricting campfires to developed campsites only. Any types of fire, including (but not limited to) campfires, charcoal, coal, and wood stoves, are prohibited unless they are being used within the campsites. Additionally, smoking is prohibited unless it is inside of a vehicle, in a building, or in a developed campground. Violators face up to six months in jail and $5,000 in fines.

Stoves fueled by gas or other pressurized liquids, along with lanterns and heaters that meet safety specifications, are still allowed on public lands.

Following suit, Coconino County enacted similar restrictions within county parks. Here is the list of restrictions within Coconino County parks:

Camping is permitted only in the designated campground in Fort Tuthill County Park;

Smoking is strictly prohibited outdoors and only allowed in designated areas and/or in enclosed vehicles;

Parking is prohibited on grassy forested areas and only allowed in designated parking areas;

Open fires are prohibited. This includes campfires, charcoal grills, torches, fireworks, and candles. Only Liquid gas stoves are permitted in improved areas (cleared of all vegetation, typically cinder or gravel surface).

The City of Flagstaff is also enforcing Level 1 restrictions. In addition to all of the above, the Flagstaff Fire Department is:

Prohibiting cooking and all outdoor fires (including wood/charcoal/gas stoves) in city parks;

Prohibiting smoking on the Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS), Thorpe and McPhearson Disc Golf Courses and Buffalo Park; and

Removing grills from Thorpe and McPhearson Parks.

The restrictions will be in place until further notice, according to officials from the various jurisdictions.

The program strives to spread drug abuse awareness among fifth graders on the national and local scale. Coconino County Sheriff Bill Pribil says federal, state and local funding cuts impacted his departments programs, and the agency had to cut some to preserve the vital public safety services. Pribil hopes information on avoiding drugs, alcohol, gangs and violence can still be accessable to students, despite the suspension of DARE.

FLAGSTAFF (CCSO Release) – In the recent past, three day holiday weekends have been extremely busy for the snow play areas located along the Highway 180 corridor with several of the more popular areas reaching capacity by 11:00 a.m. Representatives of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the Flagstaff Police Department, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety believe that Northern Arizona will receive an extremely high volume of winter recreation enthusiasts during the 3 day M.L.K. Weekend.

Of particular concern is congestion on Highway 180 north of Flagstaff, since several popular winter recreation sites including Arizona Snowbowl, Flagstaff Nordic Center and Wing Mountain Snow Play Area are located along the highway. Additional snow play locations that are not on the Highway 180 Corridor are also available and include: Mormon Lake Lodge and Happy Jack Lodge along Forest Highway 3 southeast of Flagstaff, and Fort Tuthill County Park, off of I-17 just south of Flagstaff.

Snow play areas map with directions and restrictions, available from the Flagstaff Visitors' Center website. (Courtesy: Flagstaff Visitors' Center)

If you are using the Highway 180 Corridor please expect the possibility of heavy traffic congestion and significant delays. In the event of heavy congestion public safety agencies may offer alternative routes as you enter Flagstaff. Please consider these alternative routes as viable options. On particularly busy days the traffic congestion seems to be the heaviest from 4:00 pm to after 6:00 pm. Winter enthusiasts may consider leaving earlier to avoid some of the heavier traffic. Remember you are here to have fun so please exercise patience and courtesy.

Visitors who are traveling to and from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park may want to consider alternative routes that would allow them to avoid heavy traffic congestion and significant delays on Highway 180 during peak hours of use. Travelers to the South Rim may head west from Flagstaff on Interstate Highway 40 to State Route 64 just east of Williams AZ and North on 64 to the Grand Canyon. An additional route is north from Flagstaff on US Highway 89 to the junction of Hwy 89 and State Route 64 just before Cameron, and west on SR 64 to East Rim Drive in the National Park.

When travelling in Northern Arizona motorist should be prepared for the possibility of Winter Driving Conditions.

* Know before you go – Current information about where to go to play in the snow is available daily from the Flagstaff Visitor Center at 877-878-9377. A map of Winter Recreation sites in the Flagstaff-Coconino National Forest area is at http://flagstaffarizona.org/documents/WinterRec.map.pdf
* Be prepared for cold weather and winter driving conditions with a full tank of gas, chains, flashlight and other emergency items. Pack extra dry clothes, snacks, water and a trash bag.
* Be safe and aware. Don’t park along the highway. Look before you slide. Watch out for hazards and other visitors. Bike helmets are recommended for safe sledders.
* Be patient. Highways through the Flagstaff area may be congested.
* Leave no trace other than footprints and snowmen. Take your trash with you.
* Respect private property and other locations where snow play and sledding is not appropriate.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — The Coconino County Health Department says another county resident has died from complications of the swine flu.

Health officials said Monday that a victim is a woman in her early 50s who resided in Flagstaff. Her name was not released.

Officials say she’s the second Coconino County resident to die from swine flu complications, following the death of a teenage boy in June.

American Indian artist Michael Kabotie died last Friday at a Flagstaff hospital of swine flu and related complications at age 67.

But officials say Kabotie lived in Second Mesa, a community on the Hopi Reservation in Navajo County, and was not a Coconino County resident.

Grand Canyon, Ariz. – At approximately 10:45 a.m., the body of a lone male was discovered outside of the initial Andrew Brunelli search zone by the park’s helicopter. The body is believed to be that of 43 year-old Andrew Brunelli of Clayton, North Carolina.

National Park Service search and rescue personnel had been searching for Mr. Brunelli since September 5 when rangers received a report from the Coconino County Sherriff’s Office that a man they were looking for might have planned to hike in Grand Canyon National Park. Shortly after receiving that report, rangers found a blue Hyundai Accent rented in Mr.
Brunelli’s name parked in the Grandview Point parking lot, and search efforts began in a search zone that included approximately 40 miles of trails plus associated routes, drainages and other appealing travelways in the Grandview-Hance area.

Search and rescue personnel defined their search zone based on the location of Mr. Brunelli’s rental car, his past history of short to medium day hikes in the area and the lack of a backcountry permit indicating a longer itinerary. Additionally, initial investigations determined that Mr.Brunelli had not shared a specific itinerary with any of his immediate family and that he had not been seen since approximately 5:00 a.m. on August 31.

By Wednesday morning, all of the high-probability areas within the initial search zone had been searched and in many cases re-searched by ground crews, dog teams and technical ropes/canyoneering teams. As a result, ground search crews had begun to scale back operations in the area. At the same time, continuing efforts by investigators led to a co-worker that believed Mr. Brunelli’s plans might have been a great deal more extensive than his past history in the park had indicated. This led search and rescue personnel to expand their search zone this morning.

With fewer ground search personnel to support, the park’s helicopter was able to engage in aerial search operations beyond the original search zone. Helicopter crew members spotted the body in a drainage north of the Tonto Trail and approximately two miles east of the South Kaibab Trail in the vicinity of Pattie Butte.

The body was retrieved by helicopter via long-line operation (extended from a fixed line below the helicopter) and taken to the South Rim where it will be transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
