PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) — The Central Hockey League assumed control of the Arizona Sundogs’ franchise on Friday, citing a breach in the licensing agreement by the team’s ownership group.
Consolidated Sports Holdings Inc. bought the Sundogs in December 2008. CHL Director of Operations Bob Hoffman says Consolidated Sports Holdings “had not been living up to the terms of its operating and licensing agreement in both monetary and non-monetary ways and thereby defaulted on its license.”
Arizona joined the CHL in 2006. In just their second year of existence, the Sundogs won the league title in May 2008 with a four-game sweep over the defending champion Colorado Eagles.
CHL officials say the league will oversee operation of the Sundogs and assume the lease at their home arena in Prescott Valley — Tim’s Toyota Center — until the transfer to a new ownership group can be completed.
Hoffman says the ownership change wouldn’t hinder Arizona’s ability to sign free agents and get ready for the 2010-2011 season.
