This past Tuesday the Coconino lady Panthers hosted the Mohave lady Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds came in looking to break their losing streak, having their last win since November 30.

On the opposing side the lady Panthers were rolling on a hot two game winning streak, especially their previous game of dominating the Cortez Colts, 56-8.

Sophomore Oniah Barton-Paddock came into this game leading the team in every category. With 13 points-per-game and 9 rebounds-per-game. It was interesting to see Barton-Paddock did not get a single rebound against the Thunderbirds, but got a nice stat line. With 12 points, 5 assists, 3 steals and 1 block.

I asked head coach, Martin Reyes on his thoughts on his sophomore phenom player.

“All of the athletes play their best every night but Oniah shoots the ball very well and when she is on the court she takes the other team’s conscious to get her teammates the ball.”

Mairlee David another sophomore for the lady Panthers helped lead the team to victory with 6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block.

Being the second higher scorer on the team, it is awesome to see two sophomores leading the team showing young promise for the team’s future.

The Panther’s will head to the Pepsi Cola Holiday Invitational where they will first take on the Poston Butte Broncos from San Tan Valley. The tournament will mainly take place at Northland Preparatory Academy and begins on Thursday, December 6.
