May 20, 2014 (6:00 p.m.) – NAZ Today has updates on fires burning near Sedona and on I-17 near Sunset Point. Oak Creek Canyon is closed and evacuations are under way. The Red Cross has set up an evacuation shelter at Sinagua Middle School in Flagstaff.

Further south, I-17 northbound has reopened after a brush fire near Sunset Point. The southbound lane was still closed at the time of broadcast.

It is a bad day for wildfires. The area was under a red-flag warning before the breakout of both fires. Conditions are warm, windy and very dry. Strong winds are coming in from the southwest. At the time of broadcast smoke was visible from Flagstaff and could also be smelled at the NAZ Today studios.

Conditions will improve slightly over the next few days. Winds will drop off overnight, and there is a slight chance of precipitation by Thursday.
