8/27 Update:  This afternoon the Flagstaff Police Department released even more details about the confrontation that led to the shooting death of Kenneth Mitchell.  According to Flagstaff PD Officer Taylor attempted to contact the persons inside the apartment, who could be heard arguing, through several exterior windows while his fellow officers attempted to make contact at the front door of the apartment. As Officer Taylor came around to the bedroom window of the one room apartment he observed the barrel and fore stock portion of a shotgun, with a hand on the fore stock, being pointed at him. Officer Taylor immediately backed away from the window, drew his duty weapon and advised his fellow officers of the presence of an armed suspect inside the apartment. Officer Taylor then began moving to a position which afforded him better protection and as he moved across the bedroom window he observed Kenneth Mitchell standing with a shotgun in his hands. Kenneth Mitchell had the shotgun pointed directly at a second person, now known to be Kenneth Mitchell’s son, Kenneth “Christopher” Mitchell, who was kneeling on all fours in front of his father. Officer Taylor fired his duty weapon through the bedroom window, striking Kenneth Mitchell several times, in defense of the person he saw kneeling on the bedroom floor, whom Officer Taylor believed was about to be executed.

After the shooting, Kenneth Mitchell dropped the shotgun and fell out of Officer Taylor’s view. Kenneth “Christopher” Mitchell then picked up the shotgun and took a kneeling position behind the bed. Kenneth “Christopher” Mitchell then pointed the shotgun at Officers and began threatening to fire. Despite the deadly threat now posed by Kenneth “Christopher” Mitchell, Officers on scene exercised restraint and began verbal negotiations with the son in an effort to convince him to drop the weapon and exit the apartment. This stand-off lasted for several minutes and during it Kenneth Christopher Mitchell could be heard racking the shot gun. Kenneth “Christopher” Mitchell did eventually exit unarmed and was taken into custody.

8/26  Afternoon Update:  More details have begun to emerge from last night’s shooting, including the identity of the parties involved.  Flagstaff Police Department officers responded to a domestic dispute call at the University West apartments located at 1830 S. Milton.

Witness reports say that an argument broke out between Kenneth Mitchell and his son Christopher Mitchell in which statements concerning a shotgun were heard and during which threats were made which caused Christopher’s mother and Kenneth’s wife to flee the apartment.  Police arrived at the scene and initial reports indicate that Kenneth Mitchell, a resident of Gilbert Texas was shot by Officer Roy Taylor of the Flagstaff Police Department.  Kenneth Mitchell was transported to the Flagstaff medical center where he later died.

Christopher Mitchell was arrested and booked for two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of threatening and intimidating and one count of disorderly conduct.

A multi-jurisdictional shooting investigations team has been created, at the request of the Flagstaff Police Department, to continue the investigation of this officer involved shooting. Investigators from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Arizona University Police Department, and DPS Crime Lab technicians are teaming with investigators of the Flagstaff Police Department to address the multitude of investigative needs required by this sort of incident. 1. Boy, officer Taylor must feel like a *REAL* *BIG* *MAN* for successfully committing officially-sanctioned murder of an old man.

They negotiated with the kid — while he showed hostile intent towards them. Why not attempt to negotiate with the old man? Looks to me like we had a trigger-happy power-tripping officer deciding to do a little “execution” of his own — with no prior warning.

Murder. That’s what that is. Officer Taylor should be fried.

  2. You should jailed for ignorance,

if you had bothered to read the article which states that “the barrel and fore stock portion of a shotgun, with a hand on the fore stock, being pointed at him.” it is a different situation when a gun is pointed at you and when someone is threatening to shoot you from a hiding position. Officer Taylor is a great man and did what he had to do in the line of duty.

And you know what, he is probably grief stricken about this whole situation. Its not every day you are forced to shoot someone for the safety of everyone in the complex. I spoke with one officer that said, He had been working as an officer for a while now and this is the only case of an officer shooting he can remember.

These men and women put their lives on the line for our safety, and sometimes it means taking a life. If you don’t like that, then get the f&$% out of this town cause no one wants you hear. I support the great men in Blue because they keep you safer, but let me guess if you were an officer things would be different, and your damn right because you would be cowering in a corner somewhere because instead of doing what is right some innocent person got hurt or killed. If you are not an officer in this town, then you have no room to talk.

    Give Officer Taylor a medal
if not for his bravery, for having to put up with fools like Maveth

  3. Has anyone asked his wife her side of the story? NO

Mr Mitchell looked at the cop and said 3 times DO NOT SHOOT. The cop shot as he was saying this. Mr. Mitchelll actually to the gun from his son.

Taylor needs no medal he needs a hearing aid.

  4. Hey real deal,(post edited for content) As of right now there are 3 different storys out and they all conflict one another.. Just because u see a ” forgirp and stock means that u can just shoot some one? Sounds to me like a rookie cop made a rookie choice and saw what he wanted to see and And took the life of a 78 year old man who served our beautiful country as a green Beret only to be gun down with out warning in front of his son! And why would the son not try and protect himself after seen his father killed by someone you say keeps us safe, that makes me feel real safe knowing a man that was yelling to cop to not shoot him as He took the gun from the son..and then shot him 3 times but yet they say the son took the gun after and held it up to the cops but yet he is still alive sounds fishy to me,.. I have the upmost respect for law enforcement but not when we have to worry about our own safety just from cops that maybe a little hot headed maybe or just not trained enough , you seem to think Taylor is some kinda hero and should get a medal, yea he should a metal cage!! And that is the exact reason that they even have multiple agencies to investigate this mess because it sound like someone jump the gun to me!!!

  5. While I think it’s very easy to sit here and “Arm chair quarterback” the simple fact of the matter is that none of us were there. However, I personally know Kenneth and have for nearly 3 yrs. He is a good boy with an enormous heart and loves his parents dearly. It just saddens me that Kenneth has dedicated his life to working side by side with the men in “blue” and one of them has not only taken his Father from him but his freedom.
Again, none of us were there and Lord knows how the media keeps us “fully informed”. Trust me…I’m in EMS and they habitually f#$% the story up!
With that being said let’s just remember that a life was lost here….a Father, a Husband and Grandfather is gone. Let’s all try to be respectful.
