Flagstaff (NAZ Today)- On Saturday morning approximately 150 people from the city of Flagstaff turned out at the Visitor Center to celebrate and dedicate the completion of the first 50 miles of the Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS). Vice Mayor, Celia Barotz presented a proclamation from Flagstaff Mayor, Sara Presler dedicating the completion of the 50th mile.
Construction of the F.U.T.S trails began back in 1988 and has now evolved into a network of trails throughout the Flagstaff region. These trails are used every day by hikers, bikers, runners, and walkers. The trails serve as both a recreational experience and a means of transportation connecting neighborhoods, parks, schools and the National Forest.
The F.U.T.S trails are built and maintained using funding from the Bed, Board, and Booze tax. Construction of an additional 80 miles of trails is planned, which will eventually give Flagstaff a total of 130 miles of trails. Many of the future trails will be used to help connect the existing trails together.
Below are video clips from the dedication ceremony and an interview with Martin Ince, the Multi-Modal Planner from the City of Flagstaff that is responsible for the planning of the FUTS trails.
