Ash Fork (NAZ Today)- On February 25, 2010, a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in an on-duty shooting at the Ash Fork Chevron Station, just off Interstate 40.
The deputy had stopped at the Chevron station to talk with a suspect, after calls from a nearby flagstone business reported the man had “pulled a gun” on one their employees.
The suspect was standing adjacent to the water truck he was driving, which was stopped at the main gas pumps. As the uniformed deputy approached, the suspect pulled out a handgun and confronted the deputy. The deputy drew his weapon and fired, hitting the suspect. The suspect fell to the ground and was pronounced dead after medical personnel arrived.
The deputy was not injured in the altercation. The suspect has been identified as 43-year-old Andy Hammond from Ash Fork.
Detectives have also confirmed that Hammond was wearing a bullet proof vest during the confrontation with the deputy.
The Department of Public Safety, Officer Involved Shooting Team, is handling the investigation and has been on scene today conducting follow-up interviews with family, friends and businesses where Hammond had previously confronted employees prior to the confrontation with the deputy.
The deputy remains on administrative leave as per YCSO policy.
