FLAGSTAFF (NAZ today)– The Grand Canyon Chapter of the Red Cross has begun opening shelters in Northern Arizona today as a powerful storms bring large amounts of snow to the high country and heavy rain to lower elevations.
At 2:00 p.m. a shelter at the Tonto Basin Elementary School opened and at 5:00 p.m. another shelter will open at the Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood. Pre-evacuation orders were issued by Gila County Sheriff’s Office deputies earlier this afternoon to residents in the Roosevelt Lake area.
Red Cross Emergency Services staff have been collaborating with emergency managers to identify potential shelter locations. Shelter teams are ready to respond and equipment has been pre-positioned ahead of the storms. Many partner agencies are also on stand-by to provide support with volunteers and feeding operations.
The Red Cross anticipates opening more shelters due to flooding, power outages and stranded motorists. A Red Cross shelter provides a safe, warm place for people to stay as well as meals until they can return home.
