There was heartbreaking news for the NAU community this morning. Friends of Delta Chi fraternity member Nick Acevedo say he took his own life last night. Flagstaff police confirmed that a body was found at an address on Fountaine Street near the university.

Acevedo was a witness in the Stephen Jones NAU shooting trial last year. He knew the victims, including Colin Brough, who died in the 2015 incident.

Friends of the 23-year-old senior say the news came as a surprise and a shock. Acevedo's death comes a year after Ryan Waltman, NAU Phi Delta Gamma fraternity chapter president, died by suicide. Just last weekend, a group of Waltman’s fraternity brothers held an event to increase awareness of suicide among college students.

Flagstaff Police Sgt. Cory Runge said suicide is a growing problem in Northern Arizona.
