Man Faces Murder Charge in Death on Navajo Nation

TSAILE, Ariz. (AP) — A Navajo man who took another man up on an offer to drive him home is accused of killing him.

Adam Benally was charged Monday in the weekend death of Trevor Stephens in Tsaile (say-lee) on the Navajo Nation. According to an affidavit, Benally and Stephens had been drinking together the night before, and Stephens offered to drive Benally home.

Benally told a tribal investigator that Stephens took a detour and he allowed Stephens to perform a sexual act on him.

Benally said he tried to stab Stephens with a pen when Stephens “started acting tough.” That didn’t work, and Benally told the investigator he then strangled Stephens, left his body beside the road and drove off.

A preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday in federal court in Flagstaff.
