FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities in northern Arizona are on the lookout for anyone who isn’t complying with fire restrictions.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is conducting periodic air patrols over the next two weeks to locate any campfires that are banned under fire restrictions in Flagstaff, Coconino County and on forest land.
DPS says it will notify law enforcement officials on the ground to locate and cite violators.
Anyone found in violation of the fire restrictions could face up to $5,000 in fines, six months in jail or both.
The penalties are steeper if a campfire sparks a wildfire.
The fire danger is high in the area, and authorities say they want to prevent any wildfires from igniting.
