FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say the first human case of West Nile virus in Coconino County this year has been diagnosed in a 40-year-old woman from the Flagstaff area.
Officials with the Coconino County Health Department said Wednesday that a blood specimen from the patient tested positive for the virus at the Arizona State Health Laboratory.
The victim had been bitten by mosquitoes while traveling in western Arizona, but the exact source of the infection is not known for certain and local transmission cannot be ruled out.
Authorities say the woman was not hospitalized and has recovered from the milder form of the illness.
It’s the first human case of West Nile virus in Coconino County since 2007 when there were two cases.
