UPDATE: CAMP VERDE, Ariz. (AP) — A small plane has crashed in a mountainous area south of Flagstaff, killing one man and injuring a second.
Sheriff’s spokesman Gerry Blair identified the deceased as Robert Remiro. Remiro’s son Edward Remiro, 32, was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center and was listed in serious condition, Blair said.
Edward Remiro called for help at mid-afternoon, saying the plane had gone down and a second man was badly hurt, Blair said.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the plane was a vintage Boeing E75 biplane made in 1943. The plane had departed from Cottonwood and was headed to Holbrook. Gregor says the two people on board were a father and his son; the father was killed.
Blair says the plane was found by an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter crew about 25 miles south of Flagstaff near Stoneman Lake.
A man camping nearby told fire officials he heard the plane’s engine sputter before the pilot made a left turn and landed the aircraft on a ridge, Montezuma Rimrock Fire Department Chief Michael Van Dyke said. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press.
