FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — The Kaibab National Forest has been instructed to review a road management plan for its Tusayan Ranger District in northern Arizona.
More than 140 miles of road within the district’s 709-mile system was set to be removed under the plan, though elk hunters and other permitted users would have been allowed to travel off-road.
Conservationists had appealed the plan, saying it failed to consider the impacts on wildlife, air and water quality, and global climate change.
Another appeal sought an expansion of game retrieval options.
The U.S. Forest Service’s southwest region ordered the review. A spokeswoman for the Kaibab says there’s no timeline for a new decision to be issued.
