On June 16, 2009, at approximately 12 P.M., a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office K9 deputy stopped a silver colored 2006 Chevrolet Malibu on north I17 at mm 267, near Cordes Junction. The deputy contacted the driver, 30-year-old Jimmy Gonzalez from Gallup, New Mexico, regarding several equipment violations and a license plate obstruction. Jimmy claimed he was taking his brother/passenger to New Mexico for medical issues. Jimmy went on to share a travel timeline that changed during the conversation. His brother was identified as 27-year-old Joseph Gonzalez from Tucson, Arizona.
Following a record check, the K9 deputy told Jimmy he planned to let his dog “Neo” conduct at exterior sniff of the car. At this time, Jimmy told the deputy he had a loaded .40 caliber handgun under the front seat which was retrieved by the deputy. Earlier, both occupants denied the vehicle contained any weapons. K9 “Neo” was deployed and immediately alerted on the trunk seam of the vehicle. Even when “Neo” was taken towards the front of the vehicle, he continued attempting to pull his deputy partner to the trunk area. Deputies initially checked the passenger compartment area and found no contraband but did detect the odor of marijuana. While searching the trunk, a deputy found a large “brick” of marijuana inside a suitcase and several smaller “bricks” of marijuana inside a red and black duffle bag hidden behind a pile of clothes. The total weight of marijuana found is just less than 20 pounds.
During a further check of the passenger area, deputies found a purple “Crown Royal” cloth bag hidden behind a front dash console. Inside the bag, deputies discovered several ounces of cocaine.
As a result of the investigation, Jimmy and Joseph Gonzalez were arrested for Transportation of a Narcotic Drug, Transportation of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Jimmy was also charged with a Weapons Misconduct violation. All charges are felonies. Both remain in-custody on a $20,000 bond. The suspect’s vehicle was seized for possible forfeiture due to involvement in the transportation of drugs.
