Flagstaff, AZ- Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives are investigating the death of a fifteen year-old boy that died Saturday Morning, June 20, 2009 while hiking at the bottom of West Clear Creek Canyon. At about 8:45 a.m. Emergency Communications Specialists of the Northern Arizona Regional 911 Reception Center received the report of a child who was down and not breathing from the Yavapai County 911 Center.
During the subsequent investigation the Deputy assigned to the Blue Ridge Area determined that the victim was hiking with two other Boy Scouts and two Boy Scout Leaders all from Las Vegas Nevada. They began their hike at the trail head located at the end of Forest Service Road 142E. According to members of the party the victim jumped off of a boulder that was 2′ to 3′ off of the ground and landed on his feet. He looked back at one of the scouts that was behind him and collapsed. One of the scout leader and two scouts remained with the victim and administered Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation for an extended period of time. The other scout leader drove to a highway where he was able to establish cell phone coverage and reached the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.
Personnel from Rim Country Rescue, Pine Strawberry Fire Department, Camp Verde Fire Department and an Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue responded to this call for help. Rescuers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Camp Verde Fire Department were able to remove the victim with a short-haul technique. The victim was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office located in Flagstaff. Coconino County Sheriff’s Detectives will continue this investigation in an attempt to determine the manner and cause of death.
