Flagstaff, AZ – A fifty-three year old man lost while scouting for elk was located by members of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit after he had been missing for more than sixteen hours.
On Monday, May 18, 2009 at about 6:10 p.m. Emergency Communications Specialists of the Northern Arizona Regional 911 Reception Center received a call from members of the victim’s hunting party reporting him as a lost and missing person. Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area to conduct the initial search. They learned the man had left his camp located off of Forest Service Road 125 near Pine Hill East of Lake Mary Road while operating an ATV on Monday at about 10:00 a.m. and had not been seen or heard from since.
A search team consisting of seven search and rescue members, a deputy and a lieutenant conducted the ground search. An Arizona Department of Public Safety air rescue helicopter and crew conducted an air search and at about 7:30 p.m. and located the man’s ATV. Ground units respond to the location of the ATV and discovered that the victim was not with the vehicle. An extensive ground search beginning at the location of the ATV was initiated. On Tuesday at abut 3:00 a.m., search parties were able to locate the man. Rescuers found the hunter to be in good condition and he did not require medical attention, and he was returned to his camp.
