UPDATED: I-40: Fatal Accident Near Flagstaff
Investigators from the Arizona Department of Public Safety have determined that the driver of the 2003 Ford Explorer, failed to maintain control of the Explorer after the vehicle sustained a tire failure. The driver, Devin Roundy (19) from Holbrook sustained injuries while the passenger Ralph Roundy (46) also from Holbrook died from injuries he sustained during the crash.
Investigators have determined that the driver was wearing safety restraints which lessened his injuries. The passenger was not wearing safety restraints.
Officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety are investigating a single vehicle traffic accident which caused injuries and one fatality. The accident occurred at around 12:47 along the eastbound lane of Interstate 40 at milepost 245, near the State Route 99 off ramp.
The driver of a Ford Explorer lost control of the vehicle which then rolled over. According to the D.P.S. there were two occupants in the vehicle. It appears that one of the occupants may have been ejected from the vehicle.
Both occupants of the vehicle were transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center, where one was declared deceased. The names of the two are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The eastbound lanes were closed for a short time period for the landing of the medical helicopter. All lanes have since reopened without any restrictions.
