Sunset Point Rest Area Reopens

PRESCOTT – There’s some welcome news for travelers along Interstate 17 between the Phoenix area and Cordes Junction. The popular Sunset Point Rest Area has reopened to visitors following a much-needed renovation project.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says travelers stopping at Sunset Point Rest Area, about 50 miles north of metro Phoenix, now have a new and larger restroom building, two new picnic ramadas, an additional scenic overlook, as well as modernized water and wastewater infrastructure.

On an average day, more than 3,000 vehicles stop at Sunset Point Rest Area. The area originally opened in 1970 and had gone well beyond the original 20-year design without any major renovations. The project to upgrade the facilities started in November 2007.

Other improvements at Sunset Point include a reconstructed parking lot to handle more traffic, new sidewalks, lighting and landscaping.

The Sunset Point Rest Area also is home to a memorial to ADOT highway workers who have died in the line of duty.
