PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Board of Regents is expected to decide on Thursday whether to approve tuition surcharges for the state’s three public universities that would add hundreds of dollars a year to student costs.
The university presidents are calling the new fees “economic recovery surcharges.” They’re designed as a way for them to make up for a 20 percent cut in their state funding.
Arizona State University had wanted $1,200 a year surcharge, but cut its request in half on Wednesday. It now wants $600 a year for in-state students and $800 a year for out-of-state students.
University of Arizona wants $1,100 a year for all students. Northern Arizona University is requesting a $350-per-year surcharge that would only apply to new students.
