A 74% increase in opioid related deaths has prompted the introduction of NARCAN. Jason Lurkins with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office says NARCAN is a controlled substance that will help the person breathe after an opioid overdose. With NARCAN, first responders are able to prevent the opiate from being absorbed after an overdose, increasing chances of survival.

Since August, over 2500 NARCAN kits have been distributed to first responders throughout the state by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
