Beginning April 29th, flights that don’t take off after three hours of sitting on the tarmac will be subject to fines that could add up to millions of dollars.
However, US Airways has decided to protect itself from being fined by returning to the gates and canceling flights after two and a half hours of no takeoff.
Other than Continental, airlines have not commented on what they will do. Continental Airlines Inc. CEO Jeff Smisek has said that his airline will abort flights rather than receive hefty fines and will return to the gates after two hours.
Both airlines said the new procedure was implemented on Thursday.
