Ready-To-Eat Meals Confusing to Some Navajos

FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) — Some stranded Navajo Indians, especially the elderly, are choosing not to eat airdropped ready-to-eat meals because they can’t understand the cooking directions.

Nearly 40,000 meals were airdropped to residents unable to travel because of muddy roads and icy conditions on the sprawling reservation covering Arizona and New Mexico.

Navajo Nation Emergency Operation Center spokeswoman Selena Manychildren said the problem is the instruction are written in English and many elderly living in isolated areas either can’t read or can’t understand them.

The meals can be consumed hot or cold, and usually require adding water, but people who lack English reading skills have chosen not to eat them.

Snow storms battered the reservation last month, prompting the Arizona National Guard to take action.
