PHOENIX (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that Republican Gov. Jan Brewer on Thursday will announce her candidacy in 2010 for a full four-year term for the office she assumed in January upon the resignation of Democrat Janet Napolitano.
A person close to Brewer and familiar with her plans told the AP that Brewer is set to file paperwork in the morning to organize a campaign committee and hold a news conference later Thursday to announce her candidacy.
The source spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid any appearance of formal campaign activity on behalf of Brewer prior to the committee’s formation, a step necessary under Arizona law to formally launch a campaign.
Brewer’s intentions also are being reported by The Arizona Republic in an online story that attributes the information to “multiple sources close to the Governor’s Office.”
