DPS Investigators in Tucson Arrest Mother of Three for Child Endangerment

On Wednesday, July 1, 2009, DPS investigators and other law enforcement authorities assigned to the multi-agency Tucson Counter Narcotics Alliance observed an individual on a bicycle who appeared to have a spotting scope and was using the device to scan the area surrounding a trailer park located at 7717 S. Cardinal in Tucson.

Investigators believe this person was a “lookout”. At one point, detectives reported seeing what appeared to be a bale of marijuana (12 pounds) being removed from inside a shed located on a property at 7717 S. Cardinal Avenue, Space #B, in Tucson. Investigators were able to follow a 2002 Pontiac sedan away from the residence and eventually stopped the vehicle, arresting 20-year-old John Matus of Tucson. Matus was found to be in possession of a bale of marijuana. Detectives returned to the residence and obtained a search warrant after the homeowner, Gumersinda Galaz, 24, refused consent to search. The service of the search warrant resulted in the seizure of about 1,100 pounds of marijuana from inside the residence.

Galaz, the mother of three children, ages eight, five, and four, was arrested and booked into the Pima County Jail on drug related charges to include charges of child endangerment. Police are currently looking for the children’s father, Jesus Erasto Martinez, for questioning.
