On July 4, 2009, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported fatal car crash on Bloody Basin Road approximately 17 miles east of I-17. The crash occurred shortly before 4pm. The vehicle was traveling in a remote area of Yavapai County on a dirt road. The driver has been identified as 18- year-old Luis Manuel Rosales Jr of Phoenix, Arizona. Rosales was traveling with several other family members in a 2000 Dodge Durango. Mr. Rosales lost control of the vehicle which spun backwards into a ditch and rolled one time resting on the driver’s side. The vehicle then caught fire and burned completely.
As a result of the crash, one of the passengers, a 5-year-old male child was ejected from the vehicle. The child was not wearing a seat belt or using any child restraint device. Medical aid was provided to the child by family members, Mayer EMS personnel and DPS Ranger Medics who had flown to the scene. The young boy was pronounced deceased at the scene. His mother was one of six passengers in the vehicle when the accident occurred.
There were two additional children injured in the crash. They had been transported prior to the arrival of deputies and their condition is unknown at this time.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor though YCSO continues to investigate the cause of this crash.
