PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed a bill that would have created special license plates to raise money for groups supporting disease research and other causes.
The bill would have raised money to fight hunger and to support the Arizona Masonic Fraternity as well as research into multiple sclerosis and childhood cancer.
Brewer says in a letter to lawmakers that the bill included a flaw that would have allowed a nonprofit organization to dictate how revenue from the plates is spent.
She says the provision would interfere with state law and procurement codes.
Brewer says her office told lawmakers about her concerns in February but the bill was never fixed.
