YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a Yuma police officer has been fired after being arrested and charged with stealing nearly $11,000 in cash from evidence storage to support his addiction to prescription drugs.
A felony complaint was filed Thursday in Yuma Justice Court against Geoffrey Michael Presco, charging him with one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices.
Presco remains jailed on more than $55,000 bond.
Yuma Police Chief Jerry Geier says Presco was officially terminated from the department Thursday.
Presco was arrested Monday on suspicion of one count of theft for allegedly taking the money, which was evidence from a case he was handling.
Police say Presco later confessed to spending the money to support his drug habit.
In his first year on the force, Presco worked the overnight shift and was selected the department’s 2008 Patrol Officer of the Year.
