PHOENIX (AP) — Gov. Jan Brewer says the Legislature is ignoring a constitutional requirement by refusing to send her approved budget bills.
Brewer has sued the Legislature and asked the Arizona Supreme Court to order lawmakers to send her budget bills approved June 4.
Legislative leaders responded that they haven’t sent the bills because they hope to reach a compromise with Brewer, and the lawmakers want the court to stay out of what amounts to a “political question.”
But Brewer’s reply filed Monday says the case is actually a matter of enforcing a constitutional requirement that legislation be transmitted to the governor when approved — not when lawmakers choose to for tactical reasons.
The Supreme Court hears arguments in the case on Tuesday.
