Air Force Realignment Cutting Jobs at Luke AFB

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — The Air Force’s proposed fiscal 2010 force structure realignment will impose the loss of nearly 549 military positions and 28 F-16 fighter jets at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale.

The cuts were announced Friday under realignment plans that also will slash 588 military personnel slots and 48 F-15 jets at its sister fighter jet training site, Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Fla.

The F-15 and F-16 aircraft cuts are part of the fiscal 2010 Fighter Force Reduction Plan.

Those planes are being replaced by the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson is scheduled to add 164 military and 10 civilian positions but lose six A-10s.

In a statement, the 355th Mission Support commander at Davis-Monthan, Col. Charles Hunter, said the missions that the airmen and civilians at the base perform are critical.

“Under the design of this force structure, our team can more efficiently perform those missions, and deliver the best warfighters and the right resources to our joint commanders,” he said.

Officials at Luke were asked for comment but did not respond immediately.
