Wildfire Season Begins North of Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — High winds are fueling a wildfire burning north of Flagstaff.

Coconino National Forest spokeswoman Karen Malis-Clark said the fire has charred about 100 acres of forest land about a mile west of U.S. Highway 89. She calls it the first significant wildfire of the season.

No structures are threatened, but Malis-Clark says fire officials are concerned that winds will push the fire toward the highway.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the Flagstaff area and east to the Arizona-New Mexico border until 7 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters say wind gusts of up to 45 miles-per-hour, low relative humidity and warm temperatures add to the fire danger.
