The US Geological Survey said the San Francisco Volcanic Field around Flagstaff was a moderate threat last week. Flagstaff is on the south end of the volcanic field, and the horizon is layered with volcanoes. San Francisco Mountain, Mount Elden, and Sunset Crater are just a few of the volcanoes in the area.

Michael Ort, a NAU professor, says there are about 600 volcanoes in the San Francisco volcanic field stretching from Williams to east of Flagstaff. The factors classifying the risk of these volcanoes are the chance of the eruption, how big the eruption may be, and who is in the way.
