At the September 2010 ArtWalk, downtown Flagstaff filled with a festive atmosphere centering on the rich artistic scene that the downtown provides. With over 30 galleries and businesses participating every first friday of each month, the streets spill over between 6 and 9 p.m. with people of all ages for the cultural values that this event brings to the community. While the various disciplines of art and music entertain most well into the night, showcases from both local and international artists often allows a meet-and-greet to discuss your opinions with the artists themselves.

Wednesday Evening Schultz Fire Update: 14,500 Acres, 25% Contained

FLAGSTAFF (NAZ Today)– Day three of the Schultz Fire was a good one for both residents and firefighters.

Evacuees were allowed to return to their homes at around 8 am this morning. Despite a few flareups, the fire only grew about 500 acres to 14,500 acres. The fire is now 25 percent contained.

Firefighters worked hard to save Lockett Meadow today, and dropped ping-pong balls filled with flammable liquid to start a controlled fire designed to burn away fuels ahead of the fire and stop it from spreading into the Inner Basin.

Officials from the Type-1 Incident Command Team would not speculate how large the fire would grow to once the containment line was finished around the northern and western parts of the fire.

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley spoke to the media about how the San Francisco Peaks are sacred not only to the Navajo people. “The mountain is sacred to 13 other nations,” Shirley said. He also mentioned that the Navajo hot shots were quick to respond to the fire. “They were some of the first ones here.”

Shirley spent the afternoon touring the fire area and at the Emergency Operations Center in Flagstaff with local officials.

VIDEO: Crews Making Progress on Schultz Fire

FLAGSTAFF (NAZ Today) – On Tuesday the Schultz Fire grew to 14,000 acres; by the end of the day the fire was about 20% contained thanks to calm winds. For the immediate future, areas evacuated on Sunday and Monday seem to be out of harm’s way. Residents living in evacuated neighborhoods north of Flagstaff were allowed back into their homes Wednesday morning.

Coconino National Forest officials have said that the fire could change just as quickly as the winds. Hotshot crews are expected to completely contain the blaze in about two weeks, but the fire could burn much longer than that.

Kevin Boughton got a chance to survey the damage the Schultz Fire has left in its path.

Governor Brewer Visits Schultz Fire

FLAGSTAFF (NAZ Today) – Governor Jan Brewer addressed members of the media, along with concerned citizens, this evening near Schulz Fire north of Flagstaff. She said she was struck by the magnitude of destruction the fire has left in its wake. The governor also met with city, county, state and federal officials at the Emergency Operations Center in Flagstaff on Tuesday, she said she is confident fire crews will be able to gain control of the fire that has been burning since Sunday.
